    Dear Fishing Partners,

Thank you for your continued interest in collaborative fisheries research. The work we have accomplished as part of the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program has been very rewarding and clearly demonstrates the benefits of fishermen and scientists working together. Although we have had great success with the Collaborative Fisheries Research Program over the past three years, we are having difficulty finding funds to keep the work afloat. Last fall, we submitted a proposal to the Ocean Science Trust’s Monitoring Enterprise to use our proven collaborative fishing techniques to conduct 2 years of baseline surveys of MPAs in the north-central CA region. Although we received outstanding reviews from the external review panel, ultimately our proposal was not funded. The projects funded include:

SCUBA surveys of kelp and shallow rock ecosystems
Analysis of citizen-science data from rocky shores and sandy beaches
Citizen-science scuba surveys of rocky reefs
    ROV surveys of deep-water habitats
Analysis of citizen-science data collected through Beach Watch
Surveys of seabird distributions and ecology
Surveys of sandy beaches and surf-zone ecosystems
    Surveys of rocky intertidal ecosystems
Socioeconomics and demographics of coastal use
Aerial kelp surveys and intertidal habitat mapping
    Integrated ecosystem assessment

You can learn more at: www.calost.org/NCC_awards_announcement.pdf

Although we are disappointed that we did not receive funding, we are still committed to the collaborative research principles and are working very hard to find ways to continue establish new funding streams. For example, we are currently exploring funding possibilities through NOAA and there remains a slim chance we may be able to sample this August and September. We will keep you informed.

Thanks again for all your work and energy to develop the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions about next steps. Please contact us if you have any questions, we look forward to continued work with you in the future.

    Cheers,
