I decided to use my new gelcoating capabilities to freshen up my boats "cap". In molded glass boats, the "cap" is the part of the boat that gets placed over the top of the hull and forms the surface for the rails and/or gunnels. The seam between the hull and the cap are usually hidden beneath the rub rail. Looking at my rub rail revealed a series of failing repairs...
There were also a zillion "eggshell" cracks on the top of the gunnels...
It didn't take a lot of detective work to figure out why this part of the boat had taken such a beating. Back in the day this boat made a living bringing a lot of fish "over the rails"...
While I think her working history is kinda cool, all of that salty history created lots of wear and tear that needed to dealt with. I pulled off the rubrail and found plenty of fractured and bruised glass. Out came the grinder, and I got itchy all over again. I re-glassed everything with as many layers of biax and epoxy as it needed to get everything back to grade...

Followed by enough block sanding to have my wife making karate kid jokes...
I also ground and skinned the top of the gunnels...
I used this stuff for any final finesse work...
This stuff is great to work with...
Hope to get everything ready for Gelcoat Party II this coming weekend. Until then, wax on-wax off.
